Course overview
The WSQ Security Elective Courses are specialised, standalone modules that let security officers expand their capabilities beyond the core licensing units. Each elective qualifies you for specific, in-demand deployments — guarding gazetted protected areas, operating security screening checkpoints, or managing crowds and traffic at events and busy sites.
Unlike the PWM rank pathway, these electives don’t need to be taken in sequence. You can take a single course relevant to your role, or complete all three to make yourself deployable across a wider range of assignments. Each course runs over 2 days, ends in an assessment, and earns its own nationally-recognised WSQ Statement of Attainment.
Specialised electives make you more employable and open the door to higher-value postings. Roles at protected places, screening checkpoints, and major events often require these specific WSQ certifications — holding them sets you apart and can lead to better-paying deployments.

Learning outcomes
Each elective is a standalone WSQ course with its own POLWEL assessment. Here’s what each one qualifies you to do.
Apply the security safeguards for buildings under the Infrastructure Protection Act (IPA), manage and deny unwarranted entry through screening, search, detention and arrest procedures, and detect, deter, deny and respond to suspicious activity around a protected place.
Prepare for security screening duty, screen a person using walk-through and hand-held metal detectors, conduct manual (pat-down) screening, carry out manual bag searches, and conclude screening activities correctly.
Set up physical barriers and demarcation, apply crowd control methods, regulate and disperse crowds, assess crowd behaviour, ensure safety for persons with special needs, and manage traffic flow using hand signals and signage.

Course Pre-requisites
These electives are open to new entrants and serving officers alike. The only difference between them is the English proficiency level required, depending on the course.

Course Fees
The SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) subsidy covers up to 70% of the course fee for eligible learners. Singapore Citizens aged 40 and above receive the highest subsidy tier (the Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy), while Singapore Citizens and PRs aged 21 and above receive the baseline funding.

SkillsFuture Credit is a government top-up given to every Singapore Citizen aged 25 and above to pay for approved skills courses. All Singaporeans aged 25 and above receive a $500 opening SkillsFuture Credit, and Singaporeans aged 40 and above receive an additional $4,000 Mid-Career SkillsFuture Credit. You can use your SkillsFuture Credit to offset the remaining fee after the SSG subsidy — often reducing what you pay out of pocket to as little as zero. Credits are applied after the SSG subsidy, and our team will guide you through the claim when you register. You can check your balance anytime at myskillsfuture.gov.sg.
Beyond SkillsFuture Credit, you may be able to offset fees using your PSEA (Post-Secondary Education Account) funds, or NTUC UTAP if you’re a union member. These can be combined with the SSG subsidy to further lower your cost.

What you'll earn
On passing each module’s assessment, you’ll receive a WSQ Statement of Attainment issued by SkillsFuture Singapore. Together, the three SOAs form the training qualification required for your Security Officer licence application.
